Why Markets Close Early

Early closes are a long-standing tradition that allows exchange employees and traders to travel or prepare for major holidays. They are not related to market conditions or volatility โ€” they are scheduled in advance and published on the NYSE and Nasdaq official calendars.

What Happens to Open Orders?

GTC (good-til-canceled) orders remain active and carry over to the next trading day. Day orders expire at the early close. After-hours trading may still be available from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET, though volume is typically lower on early-close days. Check with your broker โ€” some may restrict after-hours access on these dates.

Bond Market Early Closes

The U.S. bond market (per SIFMA recommendations) often closes early at 2:00 p.m. ET on the same days the stock market closes early. On certain dates โ€” like the day before Independence Day โ€” bonds close early while stocks follow a regular schedule.
