Can You Trade Stocks 24 Hours a Day? Overnight Trading Explained

No — the U.S. stock market is not open 24 hours a day. But select brokers now offer overnight trading sessions that let you trade certain stocks and ETFs between 8:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. ET. This is not the same as the NYSE or Nasdaq being open — it is a separate electronic session with unique rules and risks.

Is the Stock Market Open 24/7?

No. The NYSE and Nasdaq regular session runs 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday. Extended hours (premarket and after-hours) add several more hours, and overnight trading through select brokers fills some of the remaining gap — but the exchanges themselves are not continuously open. A 2026 SEC filing described a proposed NSCC operating model that would support 24x5 clearing from Sunday evening through Friday evening, but this is not yet in effect.

What Is Overnight Trading?

Overnight trading is a session offered by select brokers — typically from 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. ET — where you can trade a limited set of stocks and ETFs on alternative trading systems. It is not available on all platforms, and the experience differs significantly from regular-hours trading.

How Overnight Prices Are Formed

Overnight prices come from a much smaller pool of traders. An overnight trade at $100 does not mean the stock will open at $100 at 9:30 a.m. ET. The opening auction aggregates orders from the full market and may produce a price far from overnight levels. Overnight quotes are indicative, not guaranteed.

Risks of Overnight Trading

  • Extremely low liquidity: Very few participants, meaning even small orders can move prices significantly.
  • Wide spreads: Bid-ask spreads can be many times wider than during regular hours.
  • Disconnected venues: An overnight price on one platform may differ from another.
  • Limited securities: Not all stocks are available overnight; many are restricted.
  • No market-on-close or auction participation: Overnight trades are pure ECN matches.
