Stock, Options, Futures and Bond Market Hours Compared

"Is the market open?" can mean different things depending on what you trade. Stocks, equity options, index futures, Treasury bonds, forex, and crypto all have different trading schedules, holiday calendars, and early-close rules.

U.S. Stock Market Hours

NYSE and Nasdaq: 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday. Closed on 10 designated holidays. Premarket from 4:00 a.m. and after-hours until 8:00 p.m. ET are available through most brokers for eligible securities.

Equity Options Hours

U.S. equity options trade during the same hours as stocks: 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET. Most equity options do not trade in premarket or after-hours, even if the underlying stock does. Index options (like SPX) may have slightly different closing times (4:15 p.m. ET for SPX PM-settled options).

Futures Trading Hours

U.S. equity index futures (S&P 500, Nasdaq-100, Dow) trade nearly 24 hours a day on the CME Globex platform, Sunday 6:00 p.m. ET through Friday 5:00 p.m. ET, with a daily maintenance break from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET. Futures often trade when stock markets are closed, making them a key indicator for overnight and holiday sentiment.

Bond Market Hours

U.S. Treasury bonds trade from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET. The bond market follows SIFMA recommendations for early closes (2:00 p.m. ET) and has additional holidays when stock markets remain open, including Columbus Day and Veterans Day.

Forex and Crypto

Forex trades 24 hours a day, 5 days a week (Sunday 5:00 p.m. ET to Friday 5:00 p.m. ET). Cryptocurrency markets never close — they trade 24/7, including weekends and holidays. Neither forex nor crypto observe U.S. stock market holidays.
